St Oswalds Primary School 2006

Our aim was a journey from Dove Cottage to Fells around Grasmere. Basic map work, identify and mapping trees along the route, discover about more about the history including lake poets and cultural landscape. Use of experience on site for subsequent creative writing and art work.

Activities
Activities prior to the site visit included use of basic keys& tree id website. Introduction to basic map work.

On site
Children use maps to plot route, Develop tree & basic plant id skills, mapping trees on parts of the route , introduction to habitats and simple comparison of areas, Observation and discussion of landscape and historical/ cultural features .Listening and observation activity.

Follow up in school:
Use of site visit for writing and art work.

Learning outcomes:
Use of simple keys and identification. Children learnt to recognise certain types of plants/ trees and simple comparison habitat . Learning to use maps, sense of place, awareness landscape changes Information on life in the area at the 1800's
