Education

Climate change represents one of the most serious threats to people and the natural environment both globally and locally. Raising awareness of the potential impacts of climate change on the uplands of Cumbria is a key theme underpinning the Flora of the Fells project, its publications, education work and Flora of the Fells Festivals.

The Mission Possible booklet published by the Flora of the Fells project in 2008 looks at some of the changes which might take place in Cumbria as a result of climate change. It looks at the impacts on our lakes, rivers, woodlands, wildlife and agriculture and offers some simple suggestions for how we can all act to make a difference.

The impact of climate change on the flora and landscape of Cumbria’s uplands will be a major focus of the Flora of the Fells 2010 festival. Events and activities will highlight the links between climate change and the landscape, look at changes which are happening now and how we can all help play our part in reducing the impacts of our lifestyles on climate change.

Climate Change and Flora of the Fells Education Resources

We are currently developing a climate change module linked to our ‘Mission Possible’ publication to use to engage with young people. It will consist of a talk and workshop ideas plus follow on activities which schools can become involved. These will be piloted in several schools during 2010. The module focuses on the possible impacts of climate change on the landscape and environment and could be used on its own or linked to Sustainable or Eco-Schools

Natural England and Climate Change
Climate change is a major focus of work undertaken by Natural England, a key partner in the Flora of the Fells project.

Over the past two years Natural England has piloted an approach to assessing climate change impacts on the natural environment and has developed adaptation strategies in four landscape areas, one of which was the Cumbria High Fells. This pilot shows some of the changes the Lake District uplands are likely to undergo through climate change and highlights which of our most important landscapes, habitats and species will experience these changes.
